Of course, that calculation leaves out a number of details. Such as for instance, that the cost of +8 armor is FAR FAR more than the cost of +5 armor of invulnerability.
And, if you want +4 AC of bonusses when you already have +4 armor, +4 ring of protection, and a +3 amulet of natural armor, you need to spend 9000+gp to get +5 armor, 18,000+gp to upgrade the ring of protection, and 32,000gp to upgrade the amulet of natural armor. (Meanwhile, going to +4 armor of invulnerability costs only 28,000gp).
The value of +x AC depends upon what it stacks with.

Elric said:You should note that AC and DR are very different, so comparing magic items might not work well. +1 Armor of Invulnerability costs the same as +4 Armor. But if you want +4 AC worth of bonuses, you could get +2 Armor, a +1 Ring of Deflection and a +1 Amulet of Natural Armor for 8k, while the armor would be 16k. This would make it seem like DR 5/- should be worth more than +3 AC.
