How much controll do you give your players?

As dm, I choose what rules (including supplements) and options are available. I also select the treasure that is available. However, I do try to have "I'll make you an 11th level item of your choice" type of npc rewards from time to time.

Narrative Control: Considerable, it's a sandboxy game and I have added a "plot point" system that let's players change/add NPCs, places, relationships and more

Supplements: In 4e land anything except MM races and Adventurer's Vault

Treasure: I pick currently, I'm thinking I'll keep making them but give the option to use the "pick a parcel system" if they spend some "plot points". Probably make them choose before the item is revealed though (I generally make unique items). Items aren't handed out to often in my game though as I prefer a slightly lower magic feel, so items scale with the user (+1 sword becomes +2 when the wielder is 6th level); it works because magic items aren't for sale.
 

When you run your games in any edition of D&D how much controll of the game do you allow your players to have?

Do they have free reign on any supplement they wish or do you restrict them?


I'm somewhat restrictive here. I only allow books in that I own. Even then, not everything from said books may be allowed (though that's rare, to be honest).

Do they chose who gets what treasure items or do you place items spacifically for certain players or do you follow the guidelines of the book or adventure you're using?

It's a mix, I suppose. Generally, treasure will be tailored to the situation and circumstance, based on location, villains, etc. If I'm using an adventure, I'll rarely change what's in there (though sometimes I will). I'll also keep in mind what the players want for their characters, and maybe fit some of those in if it fits.

The players fight among themselves as to who gets what. (For my players, it seems that "shares" are completely unheard of - they simply give items out to each other based solely on 'need'.)
 

In our current 4E game, my DM sends us emails with info like:

"Luka is going to be 5th level very soon, please tell me which new power he will get. Also, in the next session when you guys get downtime, please describe what is Luka doing to learn that new power."

or

"Luka is going to get a 5th level magic item soon, please provide 3 options from the PHB or Adventurer's Vault"

That way, we help the DM mantain the narrative quality of the game
