D&D General How much of your annual gaming money does D&D get?

It really varies from year to year. Back in the 90's it was probably 100%. Then I got into indie RPGs in the early 2000's and most years then it was probably down to about 20%. Now I've been buying Cyberpunk stuff and D&D 5E stuff mostly the last year so it's more like 80% D&D the last year probably.

Also depends on what we're playing too.

Since 5E, not really a lot. Which is odd because I consider 5E to be the best edition of D&D yet. I've got the core books, Xanathar's, Curse of Strahd, Acquisition Inc., and one other campaign setting (I can't remember which) and that's it. I started purchasing 2nd edition books in 1989 and by 1995 I had dozens and dozens of D&D books and in the same amount of time I only have 8 of 5E. Wow. It's weird that I spent so much more money on AD&D back when I had far less of it than today.

Seriously, in 2020 I purchased one D&D book. But now that I look at it I didn't purchase a lot of RPGs in 2020.

So in 2020 I think I only spent $318 on role playing games with $50 which is about 16%. It would take a lot more effort to calculate how much I spent on gaming. I purchase many, many Warhammer 40k miniatures this year and a few computer games to boot.

Specifically D&D? Very little. About $150 (or less) - depends upon how many books + misc they put out in a year im interested in.
Double that figure if you'd like to count the occasional PF book & assorted minis bought only for RPG purposes.

This has been the pattern for many years.

Most of my hobby $ goes into miniature wargaming (all genres).
Some of this gets cross use on D&D night, but its not why it was bought....

Miniature synergy between games is an added bonus for wargamers. I use my D&D miniatures for SAGA Age of Magic. Will use them for Mantic's Vanguard.

My buddies and play D&D exclusively for RPGs, so for RPGs D&D gets 100% of the money I spend. However, we also love to play games like Terraforming Mars, Mystic Vale, Clank!, and more. D&D glacial release of rules supplements(I don't buy settings or adventures) means that as a whole, it gets maybe 10% to 20% of my annual gaming spending.

Right now I'm playing D&D 5e exclusively, so almost all of my money goes that way. It's close to a 50/50 split between WotC and third-party materials - last year I bought "Rime of the Frostmaiden" and "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything", but also "Tome of Beasts 2" and "Monster Manual Expanded 2". I would expect 2021 to have a similar split, but probably with fewer purchases generally.

Having said all that, there was a "Star Trek" Humble Bundle that I just had to buy in to. So it wasn't quite 100% D&D.
