How much to create an amulet of contingency?

Lord Ben

First Post
My main question is how much an amulet that allowed a fighter to use contingency cost? I know he can't recharge it himself, but at least he can have certain spells activated when he wants. How much to allow him to cast haste as a free action 1/day?

Another option I though of is I want to create an item/spell for my NPC's that would allow them to have a few basic spells cast on them in combat. Ideally it would be a spell like contingency that you could cast on a person and it would activate another spell during combat as a free-action. Ideally every NPC wouldn't have to spend a precious round activating haste only to be destoyed before he can use it.

I figure the easiest way to do this would be to create an amulet or tatoo (can't be looted!) of contingency that can only cast spells on you and it has to be an enhancing spell instead of something like teleport, etc. Another option would be an item that you cast a spell into and then activate as a free action, the catch being that it's gone from the casters list and he can't replace the spell until it's cast. Somewhat more balanced.

Assuming the fighter has made friends with a spellcaster, it costs about 24k. Take Ion Stone of Spell Storing - the vibrant purple one, I think, it costs 12k. Get a wizard friend to cast Contingency into the stone. Take another ion stone of the same type, and get the wizard to cast the otehr spell you want into it. Cast Contingency from the ion stone and use the desired spell from the other. Then you get the wizard to cast Antimagic Field into one now empty stone, so he can pull it out and cast AMF when dealing with casters. Take the other to a cleric friend and get him to cast Heal into it, so when he's injured he can pull that out and Heal himself.

The same as any other item that lets you cast a L7 spell 1/day.

1800*7*13/5 = 32760 gp

16380 gp and 1310 exp to create. (Plus the ever popular DM approval)

That is a good question.

I had assumed that by spending the cost of the 7th level spell, you would get all the benefits.

I don't see anything broken about it. (Assuming the Haste is not broken at 3rd level)

But, now that you mention it, I am not certain that quicken spell is supposed to translate into an item.

Anybody know if this has been covered before?

Lots of weapons and armor do things on a free action, they don't require the quicken. But it's still an easy way to figure things out.

What are the rules for tatooing yourself with spells to cast later? Is it the same as spells? spell level x caster level x 25gp or is it x50gp? If you did it that way a tatoo of quickened haste would be 2250 or 4500, depending on if it's x50 or x25gp. It's still expensive, but not all that bad of a cost. PC's could do it too.

Simililarly, you could have a ring of spell storing which contains contingency and haste, then the fighter could cast the two spells from the ring to have haste go off at the precise point in which it is needed. He just needs to get a friendly wizard to replace the spells after each time he has used it (so he could have, at any one time, a contingency in place and one ready to be cast from the ring once it has been used.

The ring of spell storing holds 10 spell levels, so you could have a contingency to trigger any appropriate spell of up to 4th level

The previous L7 cost assessment seems wrong -

Two problems

Is in the cost of the focus of the contingency spell being 1500 gp factored in?

What is the caster level you are looking for - this item's "maximum effect" happens at 18th level.

This also brings up a question concerning contingency -

As metamagic feats do not alter a spell's actual level - could this actually be used to bring into effect a spell metamagicked over a sixth level slot?

New thread -
