A discussion about the Sudden Metamagic feats presented in the Miniatures Handbook made me wonder how often people are actually using the original Metamagic feats as presented in 3E and 3.5E.

That is, Still Spell, Quicken Spell, Maximize Spell and suchlike.

Constantly? Sometimes? Rarely? Never?

I don't think I have ever seen them used in the 200+ sessions of 3E I've run, but the Sudden Metamagic feats are being perused with much interest by my PCs.

NOTE: This poll only applies to FEATS taken by characters, not magic items.
NOTE: This poll only applies to PLAYER CHARACTERS using the feats.

Cheers!

I said often. But that's probably because a rod of Maximize Spell made it into an enemy wizard's gear. Before that, I very rarely saw much metamagic besides Quickened spells in an epic game.

Demiurge out.

Rods don't count. It must be because they have the feat, and have prepared (or spontaneously cast) spell with the feat, with all spell level adjustments and the like.

The Rods of Metamagic are pretty much identical to the Sudden Metamagical feats and are beyond the purposes of this poll.

Cheers!

It depends on tha game. One game I used to play in, I used Metamagic constantly, close to half the spells I cast had it. The current game I play in, I think they Wizard uses it sometimes, a few times a session. The game I run has no Wizard (the big metamagic users), and I don't think there's any. Another game I used to play had very little I think... another had none... erm. it varies a lot. People who are very comfortable with the rules tend to use it more if their character has it, I find.
Sudden Metamagic doesn't look like it's worth it to me. Once a day? Who wants a feat that has a relatively minor effect once a day? I can see how people would be interested, but I don't think experienced metamagic users will pick them.

Very rarely.

Used to see them more often during the heyday of Forgotten Realms Prestige Class cheese.

Extend Spell was *really* popular after Defenders of the Faith.

Once we went core only, they got much less popular.

Ever since I gave sorcs bonus feats every 5 levels, and reduced Quicken Spell to +2 spell levels, and made it usable by sorcs, I see metamagic in use all the time. It's great, because I get to use it too.

I've played a few sorcerers and have seen well-played spellcaters as well. Meta-magic feats are used but mostly by med-high level characters.

My sorc's favorite opening spell is an empowered fireball. His favorite single target spell is a double empowered MM. He loves to use empowered bull's strength (3.0)to buff his allies.

With a different sorc, I also made use of extend and maximize meta-magic feats.

I love sorcs. No brain spellcasting at it's finest.

Our psion uses metapsionic feats about twice per session.

Our archer-cleric doesn't have any.

Our ex-cleric is big on empowers.

And in the games that our sorcerer/archmage is around for, metamagic is the name of the game.
