We have never really used them; the spellcasters in my group have never thought the level cost was worth it. We have started using the sudden metamagic feats. Actually, we started when it was presented as a house rule in Dragon.

Until recently the PCs in my game were not high enough level to use them. If we make the (inaccurate) assumption that games occur evenly spread across all levels, I'd say you can then assume that 45%+ of games won't use metamagic simply because they don't have access to the 5th and higher level spell slots that are really required.

I must say I echo some of ArthurQ's sentiment on the current system...

My sorcerer character took both silent and still spell. The nature of the character is such that it may be necessary to be subtle, and as part of a noble family someone might think kidnapping for ransom is a good idea, which generally involves binding and gagging.

Also great when grappled.

To go along with the feats, I choose some spells with no material components.

A friend played a cleric that was so dependent on metamagic spells that when 3.5 changed the spells he used them on, the character was hardly playable anymore.

If you have a sorceror its almost guaranteed to use some meta magic every session... even if its an extended fly spell. Fireballs and other energy type spells usually are also commonly converted to Eletrical or Sonic in order to bybass demonic or other creature resistances.

Now before 9th lvl.. it way less common.

I've been in three campaigns since 3e came out.

In that time, I've seen four players take Metamagic Feats; 1 used it about every other episode, the others I think were once each.

Overall, much like crafting magic items, these don't get used that often, but the players demand the feats stay in.

Who am I to argue?

I have a player with a fire-based sorcerer who sees metamagic feats as a way to cast even more fireball spells than she normally would.

I use empower every, single day in our game, sometimes more than once. (We're still in 3.0) Empowered Eagle's Splendor for me, same for the paladin, empowered Cat's Grace for the archer. Sure it uses up some of my higher spell slots, but my DCs go through the roof, the paladin's smites and saves hit the realm of the super-incredible, and the archer usually hits on any roll greater than 4. Of course, I like my buffs :)
