Stoneskin--a powerful defensive spell with a significant opportunity cost. So, to complement the other thread on Stoneskin, how often does your group use it?

I can't recall the spell being cast once, due to the material component, it's only usefull to wizards (sorcerer wouldn't use it enough). Same for True Seeing.

I'll say "occasionally", given that it's not cast as often as Dimension Door, Evard's Black Tentacles, Confusion, Greater Invisibility, and Polymorph.

Still, it comes up from time to time, especially above 12th level.

Or rogues with UMD and a scroll. Or really *any* arcane spell caster and a scroll, etc.

People see that 250gp cost and shy away from it....and then forget about it at higher level, when it's really useful. Too bad. :(

My answer lies somewhere between 'when absolutely necessary' and 'a good amount'.

We don't keep enough diamond dust around to cast it constantly, but we're not shy about casting it on our front-line fighters in a tough fight either.

250gp for a contingent Cure Critical Wounds? Sign me up!

Actually, our group tends to cast spells that minimize the frequency of the caster getting hit as opposed to ones which lower damage.

For example, Greater Invisibility, Mirror Image, and even Displacement see a lot more use than Stoneskin.

When in doubt, don't get hit. ;)

I've only seen two spellcasters IMG get high enough to cast it. One was a wizard, the other a sorc. The wizard took it and cast it a fair amount. It tended to be one of his typical battle prep spells.

We use it quite a lot especially in end game fights. It was the difference when fighting the bad guy at the end of Shackled City (lack of detail to avoid spoiler)
