I have played several prepared arcane casters since 3rd edition has been released, and this spell sees a generous amount of use in mid-to-higher-level play. However, I would rarely cast it on myself. It seems that many people are under the assumption that the wizard is buffing herself with this spell when, again in my experience, they shouldn't be anywhere near melee in the first place. Of course, if you have the money/spell slots to burn, why not toss on a little damage mitigation?
Obviously there are unforseen circumstances (like adamantine weapons), but as a general rule, the tank gets this spell (Quickened if possible) on round two if it seems as though the combat will last more than a few rounds. She was more than willing to donate several hundred gold from her share of the treasure to assure melee staying power.
Either way...just my 2 cp
