D&D 5E How Should D&D Next Be Advertised?

Also: While BBT is certainly a populat show, I don't know that most of the people watching see the characters as taste makers.

For example, I can't imagine many people watching the episode with Settlers of Catan featured prominently and saying to themselves "I gots to get me that game."

That said, I think it's entirely feasible to get product placement ON the show and that would at least lead to some increased awareness of the game and the new edition.

If they do a television advertising, they need to reach an audience of kids, but it also needs to go in mainstream stores like WalMart and Toys R Us. If it's just going to wind up in the FLGS, there's really no point in doing mass advertising.

They should have a cartoon on Cartoon Network. Couple that with a core basic game that 9-10 year olds can play on their own and they have a chance of capturing a sizable portion of that market.

It's working for stuff like Ninjago, Bey Blades, and of course... Pokemon.

Merchandising for shows like that is through the roof.

Agreed. Got to peddle it where the little ones are interested.

Take out an ad during the Superbowl...oh wait....nevermind.

IF, and that's a giHUGEically big "If", there are the ducats for a tv commercial, then Cartoon Network is pretty much the only place to go.

Yes, during Big Bang Theory also. [EDIT] OO, and during Game of Thrones and Spartacus: Venegence...or whatever it's called.[/EDIT]

But I think getting a solid 30 second spot in on CN during Stars Wars: Clone Wars, Young Justice (is that still running in the states? I hope so. I really enjoyed it), Wolverine and the X-Men or WHATEVER comic-based show is big at the time would be the biggest boon fer the buck.

Probably, seems to me in this day and age, it's goign to be a wholely interweb campaign. Web ads and vid's on sites...well, quite like this one :D and the plethora of other RPG themed, Comic-themed, Fantasy-themed sites.

Make deals (and PAY) for web banner ad space on third party publisher sites, forums, blogs, etc.

Podcasts, obviously...anywhere you can get 'em.

For Print ads...taking out quarter- or half-page space in whatever mag's exist at the time, promotional materials, posters, stand-ups, "handouts" (which no one actually "hands out" anymore but they can be left on the counters for people to take), etc. to any and every comic-book, gaming shop and toy store in the country.

A series of "Collectable" promotion pieces (with stellar art work) of limited run for the die-hard collectors out there....maybe even a deal with Magic:TG for a limited run of 5e-themed cards to play a certain amount of the game.

Heavy presence at whatever Con's are in the preceding...say 6 months prior to release and the year following.

I think that's about all we can expect. But, make no mistake, the web-advertising will FARRRR outweigh anything you see on tv or in print.

Fair enough, but if you had never played an MMO before, would the episode where they get Penny to play really convinced you should give a try either?

I mentioned the WoW adds because I think they have the right idea. I would probably go with an animated video showing an adventuring party tackling the Caves of Chaos or something, and there would be a shot for each character with their player next to them, maybe say something about their character, and then end with something like a thrilling cliffhanger on screen.

Maybe somebody knows or remembers what classes they were actually playing in that one episode, but I would probably go with something like Galecki being a human paladin, Parsons being an elven wizard, Cuoco a human fighter or ranger, Helberg as a halfling rogue, and Nayyar as a... a... dwarven cleric or druid?

Perhaps Wizards of the Coast should do a short film like this.
