Moldvay: 1 in 6 chance on d6 for most classes, 2 in 6 chance for elves.
AD&D: as Moldvay.
AD&D 2E: as Moldvay

Seriously? You know, I played 2e for years, and I don't think we ever knew the rule for that. I remember hunting through the phb and dmg for it. The chance for elves was defined in their racial description in the races chapter, but I never saw an actual rule for how other people did it. Maybe they just assumed you knew the rule from the first edition, or mabye I had a bad copy of the DMG or something.

Heh. I'll have a look and see if I can find the rule. The AD&D rulebooks (1st and 2nd edition) are full of rules that have been left out. Hmm... maybe that's not the best phrasing. :)

Certainly, the procedure for determining whether a wandering monster is encountered in a dungeon environment is only referenced in the AD&D DMG (the example dungeon), and never explained. (I learnt about it from Moldvay).

I've been doing these answers from memory, and it's likely to be inaccurate at times. :)

Cheers!
