How to crush LotR and SW Trilogies!

I liked the LotR trilogy, and SW was alright, but I got an idea seeing the DnD movie on the sci-fi chennel recently....

Want to really get DnD fans into the movie theatres and crush LotR and SW box office sales? I firmly believe they should make the original Dragonlance Trilogy into three movies. Deffinately have Tracy Hickman as a screen writer so the ending didn't get all fudged like -some- trilogies *cough*, or that there's not a resounding 'NOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo!' when people see the films like has been said at the end of -other- trilogies *cough cough*.

Anyway, I think that would make for an awesome series of movies. Can you imagine seeing Raistlin in the third movie (Dragons of Spring Dawning) after he dons the black robes?

I can only dream.. *sigh*

Don't get me wrong, I'd go see a Dragonlance movie. (Heck, I think they'd make better movies than they made novels.) But there's no way they'd outperform LotR or SW. Even if every D&D fan in the world went to see it, you wouldn't have nearly the audience base the other two series did, and there are a lot of D&D fans who don't like DL.

I'd love a Dragonlance trilogy. But it wouldn't outsell LotR, and it definitely wouldn't outsell SW. Utterly impossible. It wouldn't come close even if it actually was better than either or both of those. People don't work that way.

I've seen a lot of people personally drawn to DL just because of that Trilogy. I, myself, was pretty much a straight-edge forgotten realms guy til a high school buddy of mine got me to read Dragons of Autumn Twilight. I then got my Mom (who hates DnD and such) to read the Trilogy, and she loved it. She even read the Twins trilogy after that.

The last three SW movies have really gone downhill, imho. They had a huge base, but were highly disappointing (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!). I really think a DL big-screen trilogy would do great. It won't crush LotR like I said (more like joked), but I think it would be great. People are looking forward to the next big fantasy/sci-fi trilogy that knocks their socks off....

As long as Orlando Bloom doesn't play Gilthanas.....

I would probably watch a DL movie, if only to support the making of such movies. I'm no fan of the DL world, or the "main" characters. Or the plot, either. *G* But if it's got the D&D license on it, I might as well go see it.

Now, let's talk R.A. Salvatore and cool trilogies...

I do think, however, that DL would surprise a lot of people in terms of its success (if done well). The DL novel line sell very well and the Chronicles were best sellers several times over. The one concern I would have is how well the Chronicles could be adopted to a screenplay. I know the novels seemed choppy at times, and that might be an issue for a screenwriter.

But I'd definitely like to see it.

If a big budget D&D movie were to be done, the odds are in favour of Dragonlance, with a slight possibility for Drizzt. However, securing an entire trilogy right off the bat might not happen because there's no guarantee that the first one would be success enough to make the wager on financing three movies simultaneously.

I recently finished reading the first one and the ending would have to be altered slightly to fit a movie concept, by the way. Not easy to fit the Queen of Darkness running away from a holy light during a crucial scene with Verminaard, so there would have to be another way to account for his powers cutting out during the final battle. It could be done, but it wouldn't happen the same way in the movie.

I would certainly pay damn good money to see the DL Chronicles up on the big screen. As long as it had a higher budget than the D&D movies it would do good I think.

To make any D&D movie, I honestly feel that it MUST be a trilogy. Theres too much to adequately cover in a single movie. Just look at what we've had so far.

It would be cool to see these books translated to the big screen - if it was done right. It would need good writing, good acting and directing and IMO, would need to reduce the cheese factor when it comes to things like spell casting.

I hate that in the D&D movies (OK, only saw a small part of the 2nd one), they feel the need to somehow tell us what D&D spell they are casting. Have them cast something, if they want to prevent the fanboy flames they can make the visual effects somehow consistent with the actual spell, but drop the "I'll cast my Magic Missile at them" stuff. You never hear Gandalf discussing what he is going to, or just did cast - its supposed to be mysterious - y'know, magical.
