How to: Cthulhu in the 20's.

First Post
So I've run D&D and other campigns. I've run Cthulhu in Modern times because I felt more comfortable. Now I'd like to try to run Cthulhu in the 20's. I'm rather unfamiliar w/ what life would be like outside of maybe what I've seen in movies... love the godfather.... :heh:

That said are there and resources maybe for Gurps, CoC, or anything else that provides good understanding of the times.

Movies, books, and most importantly RPG supplements? I'm planning to use this info to run a CoC Tatters of the King campaign. Also, if you know of anything neat from the times to throught out please do..

Electrical lights or gaslights mainly during this time. Electrical right?

You also might check out the Terra Incognita web site. It's a competiting game based on the FUDGE system, but on the home page they are always putting up links to other sites on the web that specialize in that period. I'm always amazed at the number of historical and pulp-game related sources they uncover.

Investigator's Companion Volumes I & II (as Crothian suggested) can be downloaded at DriveThruRPG.com and can answer some of your immediate questions. Also check my post in your other thread.

I draw on a lot of cultural and behavioral information from all the Agatha Christie mysteries and movies I've read and watched. They were largely written in and around that time period. Think of the Roaring 20's, Prohibition, and Al Capone ("The Untouchables")... think of the earliest points in the Great Depression. Remember that WWI was just a few years ago, and some parts of Europe are in shambles, and that millions upon millions died just a short while ago.

Some of the early Chaosium CoC mega-adventures are really good at this sort of thing. "Horror on the Orient Express" and especially "Masks of Nyarlathotep" are really well done, and include lots of period flavor.

Not to sound too simple about it.

But, how about Lovecraft's Orginal Stories.

They were, by and large, set in the 1920's.

They capture the 'feel' of CoC as well as anyone (Wonder why that is? :D )

They are easily available. (My local B&N has 6-7 Titles at any one time with various Lovecraft Stories in it).

Go straight to the Source.

PS. Try to find a copy or reprint of a Sears & Roebuck Catalog form 1920-1930. It has about everything you could ever possibly buy during the 1920's in it (including Firearms).

Best Resource I have for my CoC Games.

I haven't overlooked the original stories, and I'll be sure to check them. There's just some stuff that's probably implied by the stories that don't translate to me as I was born in the 80's.

Any clues as to somewhere online to pick up said sears roebuck catalog? I imagine there's gotta be one somewhere.

I'm not sure, but I think (from the description, ISBN, etc.) that the currently-in-print edition of the 1920s Investigator's Companion combines those two earlier volumes and can be had at Amazon (and maybe elsewhere) in print for about the same price as the PDFs.

I'm a big fan of using pictures from the period (from Wikipedia et al) for props, pictures of bad guys, what have you. It really brings you into the time.
