D&D 5E How to Deal Uber Damage

We had a tempest cleric the other day cast a maximised call lightning spell using a level 6 spell slot. 60 damage per round save for half auto hit, every round and can hit multiple targets and he has the warcaster feat.

I assume the cleric was using the Destructive Wrath ability? In that case he could do so twice per encounter if below 18th level, or three times if at least 18th level. It doesn't allow you to maximize the spell, just maximize the dice when rolled.
