Bane did something like this once. :) He did it to Phlan and many other cities and then stuck them in a cavern some where. You can read about it in the original Pools of trilogy, if you can still find them since they are long out of print.

Specifically, it's Pools of Darkness, which was an old SSI super-high-level game (the level cap was set at 30 or so; I actually hit it) before they went and made it canon with a novel. Bane takes almost every city in the Moonsea region and shoves them into Limbo; Zhentil Keep and Mulmaster are the only cities still standing.

Waterdeep gets owned pretty badly during the Time of Troubles, but I guess the whole planet got owned around that time.

High-level characters are just high-level characters. There's only so much that they can do.

Imagine the FR without major population centers, massive numbers of homicidally insane villagers running through the wilderness, and all high-level NPCs mysteriously gone. Then imagine the reaction to such a setting from people who've been reading the novels since they were ten years old - and imagine me telling them that because of this, none of the events in the novels will ever take place.

Great idea for a campain, though you may be better of running it with FR Haters rather than FR lovers.

Ya, he probably should...

Me, I have a love/hate relationship with the Realms.

I'm running a shade invasion of the FR campaign on the side - with the PCs playing the elite of the shades. :D

Usually, though, I just ignore all the stuff that doesn't do anything for me. Like most writeups of people like Elminster published after the old gray box.

Hmmmm... I wonder if any of the wards within Undermountain would have anything to do with that item working. You remember Undermountain don't you? Gigantic infinite (or darn near close to it) level dungeon located under Waterdeep. Yeah I know that the boxed set only had 5 or so maps but those are just for the upper levels, DM's are supposed to create the levels below them.
