Sounds like the group was mistaken on knocking people out. I'd refer you to the rules in the PHB in Combat: Damage and Healing - Knocking a Creature Out. The long and the short of it is - there's no such thing as subdual damage; all attacks just continue to reduce hit points. If an attacker reduces a creature to 0 hp, instead of attempting to kill the creature, the attacker can knock the creature out instead. The creature is at 0 hp and stable. A stable creature that doesn't receive healing will wake up with 1 hp after 1d4 hours. (This may be where your group was thinking 1d4 rounds)
That said, if the opponents were fighting to kill or just to knock out, this shouldn't necessarily change the challenge, or the amount of XP awarded.
