How to make a web-page?

First Post
I'm thinking of making a web-page for my campaign, with information for the players. The trouble is, I have no experience with creating web-pages. The page should be free, and there should be an ability to create hyper-links (is that what they are called?) between areas of the site. I really don't need any images,
or fancy stuff.

Advice?

Well, al sites should be able to carry hyperlinks. Your needs are probably best met by one of the many free providers of webspace (lycos, geocities etc.) even though they give advertisements. (nothing is 100% free :) )

I think you could even just type in your website in word and then say "Convert to HTML". If you don't do anything too fancy, it will work just fine. If you want to make a cool looking site though, I'd suggest either getting familiar with HTML (dozens of guides on the web) or acquiring a program which will do most of the work for you (like Dreamweave or frontpage), with the risk that it doesn't do exactly what you want.

Depending on if you have any experience with HTML, there's a couple different ways you can go about it....

If I'm not mistaken, both Word97, and Word2000 have Web Page Wizards that will almost literally hold you hand throughout the entire process, asking you "what you want to place where", all the way up to (but not including) publishing it on the web.

There's also an add-in for Internet Explorer called Frontpage Express, which is the low-end version of Frontpage. You used to be able to download it seperately, but now I believe it's an add-in for IE. You could do a search on Microsofts site for it.

Sites such as Angelfire have their own HTML editors that are really simple to use too.

Of course, you could always use notepad and code it yourself.. =)

Hope this helps.

I just posted my D&D site on Tripod (affiliated with Lycos) on the recommendation of another ENWorlder. So far it's been pretty easy and they have some helpful utilities to help you plan/build/upload your site. It's free and posts banner ads on your site.

Personally, try one of the free sites already mentioned, like tripod. They have nice WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) page builders that are pretty easy to use.

If you find you enjoy making pages and want to get into it, a good guide to doing HTML by hand is the web developer's virtual library at http://www.wdvl.com. Shows you how to do basic HTML, (the language that web pages are made it) as well as fancy stuff when you are ready.

Just as an aside: If you live in the US or Canada, your ISP almost certainly gives you some free web space, which is nicely ad-free, for non-commercial use.
