How to meet gamers?

I met my new group through Meetup.com. Met and gamed with a bunch of people, ran some one-shots, weeded through a few social incompetents and creeps, and finally cherry-picked the players who are fun to have at the table, want to play 1e, AND are normal people able to function well in society. It took a little while to filter through enough people to get the ideal group, but it's absolutely worthwhile to get the group you want. Hell, I may well go drinking with these guys sometime away from the game!

Let me second that. Meetup has been excellent for a lot of folks, ESPECIALLY in the Northern VA/DC area. Particularly:
The Greater Washington, D.C. RPG Meetup Group http://roleplayers.meetup.com/400/
as well as:
The DC/NoVa Gamers' Guild http://dnd.meetup.com/1053/
and
Alexandria Gaming Group http://boardgames.meetup.com/462/

There is a good number of us around.

As noted, there is a forum here on ENWorld. This thread may be whisked there shortly.
