How to price this?

I stuck my foot in it, and allowed a player made magic item on the fly. It was supposed to be a one shot and it was all he had for equipment, so I okayed it, but now he wants to keep the PC, and I need to know how much it is worth.

He is a Half plant creature, with 2 racial HD, small size, immmune to poison, only a 50% chance of ignoring crit hits, no mental immunities and -2 chr. It has no LA - but plant racial HD are terrible.

What he wanted was to be able to fire a dart like thorn, and not have to worry about ammunition. It can be thought of as an slotless item that can create a small non-magic dart each round. We haven't defined its limitations, but this is all is done.

according to my HRs it should have a value of no more than 9500 gp

possible?

I don't think if would cost very much. There's a 1st level psion power that let's you create 2d4 bolts/arrows/sling bullets, and they have a +1 enhancement bonus. If you made an unlimited slotless command word item out of that it would only cost 3600 gp, and with that item the result is magical.

A dart is only 5 sp, and they can be retrieved after battle, so if you were just throughing out darts you'd have to make 20 attacks per battle untill you spent more than 10 gp.

At the end of the day, I don't think the item would be worth more than 1000 gp, possibly less.
 

Didn't I comment on this once? Doesn't look like it.

I'd base it off the cantrip "bolt" which creates a bolt from nothing, capable of being fired from a crossbow or somesuch.

Other than that, without any other thought put into it, 1000 would be more than enough, if not TOO much to charge for such an item!
 

I'd say go with 1000, perhaps even allow him to fire as many as his BAB would allow. All it does is basically not make him pay for ammunition, and let's face it, ammunition (unless you run a lot of "running out of supplies" adventures) doesn't cost almost anything at all. Since the dartshooter doesn't make them magical or anything, just make it 1000 (he'll have to fire something like 18000 of them before it starts to pay off) and odn't think about it too much. I'd even allow him to enhance it with flaming and such at the normal enhancement price.
 

Where I was headed was bolt as a 0 lvl spell, quickened, slotless
0 +4(quickend) x 1800use activated x2slotless = 14,400 base price.
clearly way too expensive.

on other threads here I have seen an ammo-less bow seens as strong +1 or weak +2 abilitiy

any other comments ?

Because it's not a part OF his body.

Other that that, don't make it quickened. Have it instead build up a 'stockpile' of the ammunition. Then it's much much cheaper.
