How to raise spells limits

Is there a non-epic way to increase a level limit?

I don't mean just to increase the damage maximum or number of monsters affected, which can be done with Empower Spell if it is a random variable, but rather the target HD limit of spell, such as in Sleep. I would like to find a way to retain usefulness for some spells at higher levels.

I don't believe there's a way to affect the Wizard version, but the Barbarian version scales with level.

The only way that I can think of would be to research a higher level spell with a higher HD limit (like one of the many Greater Sleep spells floating about out there). Good news for a wizzie, but not so good for a sorcie.

Well, I was in fact trying to think on how to help the Sorcerer...

allow them to trade in a low level spell for a higher level version when they can?

...slipping into house rules here though.
