How to split big video files

Specifically avi's and mpegs so that they can fit onto a cd. I want to make the cd's into vcds so that they can be played on my DVD player. Help appreciated.

I think VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org) can split AVI files. Or, depending on how long the movie is, you could drop the bitrate by a little bit and make an XVCD.
