How to turn a Bee into a Cleric? (Maethorial)

Well, it's a silly campaign to start with so if I can make this work for her then that would be awesome. My question is simply what is the best option of turning a creature into a playable race? I know the Awaken spell is viable, but is there anything else?

Strictly speaking Awaken won't work, since bees are Vermin, not Animals (see the giant bee entry).

Abeil are bee-creatures in the MM2. However, the 3.5 update manual gives them pretty hefty level adjustments (the vassal, the weakest, is +4 LA).

Several templates can grant player-level intelligence, but most apply only to animals and not vermin. If it's a silly game I wouldn't worry about it and just apply Anthropomorphic (Savage Species) to the giant bee (compare to other CR 1, 3 HD animals to get the adjustments down).

The closest to a "bee" in printed playable races is the dromite (image here, they're on the left), but they lack wings and a true (mechanical) hive mind. They're organized very similarly though.

Finally, you could go all-out and use an entomanthrope (think werewolf, but here it's a were-bee). This is perhaps the most flexible, but it also takes a lot of up-front work. And since you'll probably spend most of your time in hybrid form, be prepared to make lots of half-bee jokes, up to and including naming the character Eric.

The symbiotic template could handle it directly, as long as you find an appropriate Tiny creature to combine with the Medium giant bee, like a junior myconid, or a puppeteer. You could also reflavour something with wings like a pixie, half-fey, or raptoran to make it bee-like (if you want a bee person, rather than an actual bee).

Or you could just ignore the usual restrictions and apply awaken anyway (or pull off the appropriate polymorphing shenanigans to make it work within the existing rules; things like this are how you get people playing sandwiches).

I'd be suprised if you couldn't convert "The Psionic Sandwhich" build into working for a bee. You could also probably do it as a cleric by finding some cheese to get the psionic stuff needed through items/bound monsters.

---

Or just use a string of polymorph any object to slowly get closer to a bee. "I'm a person" "I'm a mouse" "I'm a ___?" "I'm a bee".

--------

Me personally? I'd probably just find some stats for a bee, and say the player could have 8's for int and charisma, and whatever the bees wis mod is as a racial modifier.
