D&D (2024) Fey Video Critique & Alternate Perspective

Except that D&D goblins/hobgoblins have almost nothing to do with traditional mythological goblins? You might as well start calling D&D medusa "gorgons" because that's what they are in myth.

You mean the exact thing people were clamoring for when the "Male Medusa" was revealed and people talked about how they hate that the monsters are called Medusas because that is the name of a specific Gorgon?

Look, I'm not going to say "because they are Fey in myth" is the absolute best reason you could ever conceive of, but it IS a tie between Goblins and the Feywild. They are classic fey mooks, the Goblin King is either a Fey Lord, another name for Oberron, or a name of the Leader of the Wild Hunt. Just like I wouldn't say "there is no basis for changing Medusa to Gorgons in DnD" I'm not going to say there is no basis for making Goblins into Fey. It made sense when they started the process years ago, I'd already moved Bugbears into enforcers of the Winter Court in my home games, it is just something that can easily fit.

And yet they still do, imagine that. It's interesting that you chose three monsters that have never been a player character species in most of D&D. Their lore probably hasn't changed much compared to say an elf's or a goblin's from edition to edition. And they probably haven't changed much from setting to setting either like the PC species either.

Yeah, interesting how I chose three classic monsters that appear in myths and stories. Sure, could have picked "Elf" but since most fairy tale elves are a foot tall, and are actually represented better by other fey, it didn't seem worth the squeeze.

You don't think there is any connection between Goblins and the Feywild because the setting lore can change? That applies to everything. Literally everything in the game COULD have the setting lore change it.
