How to Upgrade My Magic Item?

I'm not happy with magic items with abilities set in stone. No name, no history, just maths. It's like sex without love, nice, but I want "to marry" my magic items .
I wonder of magic item "with souls" that can be upgraded when I advance at new level thanks to my heroic deeds, god's will, rare components (gained by quest), party's spellcaster spells etc.

Where I can find rules to meke such things?

I've seen a couple ways of doing things like this. The Kensai PrC from CW puts XP into his weapon to improve it; Legendary Weapons and Item Familiars grow in power with the character wielding them. These two you can find at http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/variantMagic.htm.

Dragon magazine had a article about magic items that 'grew' with you. So, a +1 sword at 1st level would grow in abilities and enhancement as the character grew through leveling up. The mechanic involved giving up XP to the item in question to develop the new abiliities.

Can't remember the issue of Dragon but it was in the last three years IIRC and maybe someone else reading this can recall the issue number.

Another place you can check is The Game Mechanics. They have a series of books called Artifacts of the Ages. The earlier books in that series - Swords of Our Fathers, Staves of Ascendance where about non-artifact items what would grow in ability with the wielder. In this case, the mechanics are different in that you enter a special prestige class that allows you to empower the potential of your item. Here is a link to their website...

I use the standard create magic item process for adding new abilities to a magic items. With the added rule that there is a chance that some or all of the old abilities will be pushed out of the item. But that’s the risk you run....
