D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

For my DW game: It was really good! It started off a bit slow--couple players were fatigued after a long day, folks have been Going Through It and thus had some issues here and there, I myself had had a HORRIBLE wake-up that morning so I wasn't firing on all cylinders to start.

But by the end, everyone was engaged, folks were pinging ideas off each other and taking risks and opening to new possibilities. It was...good. Really really good. Even if it was a little short (got started quite late for a variety of reasons).

Overall, I'm happy and looking forward to the group's next session.

In tonight's "Middle of Elsewhere" campaign, the PCs:
  • Were given directions by a blind elf seer to the closest of eight ritual locations, wherein groups of drow clerics were all going to simultaneously sacrifice a sufficient number of elven captives to bring about a manifestation of an avatar of Lolth to the plane of Svaltarheim (where the adventure took place)
  • Were told disrupting even one of these eight rituals would be enough to prevent the avatar from manifesting, and that Lolth would undoubtedly devour the souls of the drow responsible for the rituals' failure
  • Got to the cavern system where the nearest ritual was to take place, heard chanting coming from the corridors ahead, and rushed to put a stop to it
  • Got attacked by a drow rogue, several drow fighters, a group of drow rangers, and finally a pair of drow paladin-equivalents before we were able to spot the three drow clerics beginning to slay the first of the nine captive elves
  • Had the celestial elf witch cast a fly spell upon herself (and her celestial owl familiar), allowing them to bypass all of the drow in the way, so they could get to the ritual location faster - and told her she was the best suited to stop the ritual while the other PCs went through the drow defenders
  • Likewise had the human shadow druid race past the defenders (taking the risk of attacks of opportunity along the way, but each physical attack only had a 50% chance of hitting even if they otherwise would have, due to his shadowy nature) to get to the ritual location; he only got so far before being stopped short and having to wild shape into a dire lion to fight his way past
  • Got worried as his dire fell fox animal companion got dropped to 4 hp while trying to follow in her master's wake, as she's from a fiendish plane and doesn't have his shadowy protection; she eventually had to back off and flee
  • Had my fiendish human cleric summon a Huge fiendish monstrous centipede and a howler to help take out the drow impeding his and the fiendish orc fighter's progress
  • Put the ritual in a "time out" when the celestial elf witch put everyone involved in the ritual sacrifice in the midst of an Evard's black tentacles spell, which eventually killed the remaining five elf victims (after the drow had slain the other four) - end result, the elves weren't all sacrificed by the anointed drow blades, so Lolth sucked the souls of the drow clerics (including those at the other seven ritual locations), slaying them instantly
  • Took out the remaining drow defenders a few at a time, culminating in the elf witch slaying the last two with a well-placed lightning bolt spell
  • Leveled up to 9th level - Yay! 5th-level spells!

In today's "Down to Erthe" campaign session, the PCs:
  • Waited as the mermaid PC met up with her tribe for their monthly session, where she learned her father's body had been found days ago - he'd been stabbed several times and his throat had been slit
  • Found out the following day the mermaid had just been accosted by a human fisherman who called her by a strange name (she was in the body of the human woman she "wore" when on land) and hugged her, saying he'd thought she had been slain (and why was she dressed up in that get-up?), before dropping to a knee and proposing to her; she wasn't sure what to say until she recognized her father's dagger in his belt, demanded to know where he'd gotten it, and he confirmed he and his ship's captain took it from some "fish-freak" they killed a couple of days ago who'd been cutting through their fishing nets while at sea - at which point she brought him into an alley and killed him
  • Scoured the area for information as to where the captain's ship was to be found, and learned its docking location
  • Approached the ship, accosted the captain, who admitted to killing the "fish-freak" and jumped down into the lower hold of his fishing vessel when they attacked him
  • Found out he was a wereshark when he transformed in the safety of the lower hold, out of sight of any local passersby
  • Slew the wereshark (thus avenging the death of the mermaid's father) and searched the vessel, finding a treasure map and a woman's shawl
  • Sunk the ship and took the magical shawl to the temple of the Goddess of Magic to have it identified; it belonged to a nereid, who was bound to obey the keeper of the shawl
  • Followed the treasure map the following day, after borrowing giant sea horses (and water breathing ability for the landbound PCs) from the mermaid's tribe members, then found the captain's treasure caverns
  • Fought moray eels, lacedons, a kapoacinth, brain jellyfish, and a dire barracuda (and bypassed a pair of Medium monstrous crabs and a crab swarm) before encountering the nereid, who was grateful for the return of her shawl and allowed the PCs to clean out the captain's two treasure chests (which she'd been forced to protect when he had her shawl in his possession)
  • Returned to their home city a bit richer than when they'd left
We may end up playing again next Saturday, if the schedule holds (we normally try to hit every other Saturday), which will be another (at least partially) underwater adventure.
