D&D 3E/3.5 How would I make this item (3.5)

First Post
So the item I want to make is a fake eye, as the character I plan to create is going to have one eye. Yet the effects I want to add to the eye are true seeing, and the ability to actually see through the eye.

I can figure out the true seeing. It's the ability to see through the fake eye that I cannot figure out. At least the best way of doing it.

Also is there a way to add x-ray vision to the fake eye?

Sorry about all the "sub questions".

Thanks in advance to those that answer. :)

Fair notice... I am not a 'create magic items' guru (at least, not ones that are built according to DMG formulas).

I would start by looking at similar magic items in the DMG. In this case... the Eyes of Charming/Doom/the Eagle/Petrification.

Instead of saying that the new magic item in question is a set of lenses, you could say that it is a crystal orb or something. I would use the spell, Remove Blindness, as the base spell for the item.

It might look something like:

Magic Eye; This crystal orb, when placed into an empty eye socket, allows the creature to regain the sense of sight that it had lost.

Faint Conjuration; CL 3rd; Craft Wondrous Item; Remove Blindness/Deafness; Price 2,500 gp.

I went with 2,500 gp as the price to match the closest item, Eyes of the Eagle, since it was based off a 3rd level spell as well(Clairaudience/Clairvoyance). That is the part that I'm not sure about (the pricing, I mean)

The other effects could be added to the item as well, but I'm the wrong guy to set the price...

Nifft Normally it would be for flavor. I was just planning on the possibility of running into gorgons and other sight attacking creatures. So that maybe he could close his not fake eye and continue to see normally.

I forgot all about the ring of x-ray. I will look into it. Thanks.

Given True Seeing is a magical sensory effect, it seems reasonable for it to provide the user with ability to see via the eye as a free side-effect (at least while the effect is active).

There is no mechanical penalty for having only one eye, so this is pure flavor.

There "sort of" is, at least for magic items. IIRC, magical lenses and the like suffer some form of penalty if you use only one.

I agree with jef that the vision could simply be a side effect. However, I feel that the ability to see, even magically, does not necessarily mean you would not 'see' and, therefore, not be subject to sight attacks (like a PC with darkvision in darkness).

What you are looking for is essentially a Gem of Seeing (DMG p. 257). To make it an eye the person has to wear, I like Charry's idea of the Remove Blindness, but with only a one-time usage cost adjustment (+750 IIRC). As others said, I would simply add the ring cost since rings and wondrous items often have the same costs.

Awesome ideas. Though I thought seeing "indirectly" through an object be it a crystal ball or a fake eye would prevent gaze attacks. After all I wouldn't think you would be turned to stone by looking at a gorgon through a crystal ball.

Thanks for the good info. :)

IIRC, the difference is in the word 'image'. You are unaffected by gaze attacks if you are only looking at the image of the creature, e.g. by a mirror and the like. Looking at a gorgon through a window is a bad idea since you are still looking at 'it'.
What you describe though is imparting magical sight. As you said "to actually see".

Well then... just have to stay away from those darned gorgons then. :/

So it boils down to keep the fake eye for flavor (seeing as I could use true seeing either way) or don't keep the eye at all.

Though an awesome fake eye sounds fun, so I will probably go with that. Thanks.
