How would you do this?

Okay, for the next nig fight that my PCs will hopefully run into. I am going have them fight a flying enemy on a constantly spinning platform, with ice stalagmites on the ground outside of where the platform is. My question is, how to determine how far a PC would go each round, and what would the check be to stand your ground. And how fast on average should it be going?

Oh yeah, and i am going to have what they are fighting knock down stalagtites from the ceiling every couple of round or so. Hmmmmm, anybody have any ideas for what they should fight? They are in an ice type dungeon right now.

DC 10 balance check to stay upright every round (if failed, go prone).

DC 10 balance check to move (if failed, can't move).

DC 10 climb/balance/STR/DEX check if prone to keep from being swept to the edge.

DC 10 climb/STR check to keep from falling onto the stalagmites.

Otherwise, combat as usual. This has the advantage of making sure that the dexterious character probably won't fall down, and the strong characters won't be swept off. Anybody else on this platform who isn't strong or dexterous is in trouble.

By the way, is this inspired from Flash Gordon, by any chance?

No, it is inspired from a boss fight from the Game Boy Advance game "Sword of Mana". Although, in the fight in the game, you did not have to worry about falling off the platform, or have sharp things fall on you.

Heh. I had a flash (gah - NPI) of the same scene when I read his description. Even though it doesn't really bear all that much resemblance to what he described :)

I would say the platform moves one full face in every round (clockwise or counter-clockwise its up to you), then as the platform shifts players get have to make a Balance check to (a) remain upright and in the same square or (b) fall and slide 1-2 squares in a randome direction (use the grenade table from the dmg)

DC 15 I think

Use the stats for a Gargoyle or Large Animated Object (or combine them) and have them fight an "Ice Gargoyle" :)

well if you want a math answer.....

Determine the circumferance of the platform

How many times does it spin a round? S
Determine Circumferance
Multiply S and C ~= Distance fallen in a drop of up to 30'

2*Pi*r = Circumferance
