How would you handle this situation?

Everyone walked away happy. Everyone had fun. Mission accomplished.
I would have done the same thing, personally.

Players can forget things characters don't. I don't retcon for trivial reasons (both for and against the players), but when PC death is on the line, I like to have my 'i's dotted and my 't's crossed. It's still a game at the end of the night.

I've downloaded the status tracker (thanks for the link!) and we're looking into getting a whiteboard for our gaming room for the group to use to track spells and such in future. We played again tonight and my players are starting to plot for their next meeting with this wizard. Meanwhile he is purchasing a metamagic rod of silent spell - just in case

I think you did the right thing. It was an important situation, and not something you could fudge around.

Though I would watch to make sure that the players don't cotten onto things like that and try to get away with a little metagaming.
