Hull damage and water termites

I need to convert they OD&D water termite into 3e rules. I'm wondering how their attacks on a wooden ship would affect them.

My understanding is that the hardness factor of a ship works like damage reduction. Thus, a hardness factor of 5 would mean the first 5 points don't count. Correct?

Now, in my conversion a water termite does 1-3 points of hull damage. I was figuring that should bypass a wooden ship's hardness rating. Does that make sense?

Makes sense that these critters would ignore hardness for wood, sounds good. Perhaps build water termites as a sort of Swarm?
