What I really don't want to see a return to is the 3.X style of having to create incredibly complex NPCs with huge spell lists, feat chains and so on and so forth when creating humanoid badguys above the first couple levels. It's a hugely complicated mess and waste of time for a foe who will last less than half an hour at the table.

I really think there is space in a MM for a 1st and, say, 5th level "advanced" version of various humanoids - including humans and other demihumans. I don't think we need to go overboard with every level and class, though.I truly like what Paizo did with the NPC codex - it hearkens back to Rogues Gallery of prior editions. That sort of product lends itself well to NPCs of all races, levels and classes. A sort of mini-MM for those who need/want that level of detail.

I'm making something like that for 4e for my own campaign... although without any sort of production values. I was a bit surprised at how few "classed" NPCs there are available.

Understandable, although I think Gods and simular being should have class levels, they deserve the complexity, the 5e verison of Asmodeaus is lame and unfitting for a being who commands nine levels of Hell and can shake entire planes with his rage.

Bring back solos!

I actually don't think gods should have class levels, especially in terms of wizard or cleric. The god's powers should be incredible... within their sphere. I think it's silly that a God of Thieves might be a 10th-level wizard, capable of casting spells that are weaker than a PC might, and spells that have nothing to do with being a God of Thieves.

Sure, but such beings shouldn't be limited to purely what's in the spellbook. We're talking about creatures who can literally do whatever they think, they're not really humanoid beyond if they choose to appear so. They're gods and other immortal, nigh-all-powerful creatures that really, outside of battling another god, can break a puny adventurer with their left pinky.

However, perhaps like the Paizo Pathfinder NPC book, and the 3ed NPC book, create a Humanoid Centric MM which covers most Humanoids and Demihumanoids with various combinations, and generic sample organizations.
Personally I'd rather have Generic Thieves Guild for a city of population # size would have this many members, and rough organizational structure.
And in a side bar - Example Guilds of this size can be found in these campaign worlds' cities. FR- Waterdeep, EB- Sharn

A better product than the NPC Codex would have exactly that. Damn, I want to write a project like that now. Well, not just me.
