Maybe the more powerful spell should allow fossils of prehistoric beasts (natural, non-composite and non-magical) to be used as components, in order to bring some size into the mix without having to use whales. ;)

I just want to make sure I'm parsing the equation correctly:

where x = spellcaster level + INT modifier

lifespan (in hours) = ((x^5)/10) - 1680
- Devon

Yep. That's right. The chart lifespan figures are rounded, of course, but should be good enough for government work.

A 30th level wizard of 19 INT, for instance, could create a beast that lives over 900 years. IMO, that doesn't seem too long for a creator of godlike ability, but a DM could put a cap on it if he wanted to.

Of course, the creator could always elect to make her beasts infertile or have shorter lifespans. The fertility & gender checks and size & age limits are just upper limits of the spellcaster's control.

Doh! That's what I get for trying to do math in my head.

Even at 25 INT & 30th level, it would only be about 800 years. I don't know how I got 900 before.

And those aren't even dog years!

Anyway, I prefer charts to formulas, but I think the formula should also go into the spell for those epic-level situations. That is, if the spell is acceptable at all.

In it's current form it needs to be a 9th level spell, as it is quite powerfull, also I think it should have some sort of Xp or gold cost.
