Hypothetical: If DnD had never existed, BUT...

This is a tough one because D&D came into my life in its (relatively) early days around 1980-81. Many of the other games mentioned didn't come along until much later.

Without D&D to bridge that gap, I may not have gotten into roleplaying games at all. I'd probably have made different friends and gotten involved with the "wrong crowd". Soon I'd have been drinking all weekend and getting high in the parking lot of the school at lunchtime.

I'd start sleeping with women of low morals and then, on a whim, I'd steal a car. After that I'd spend some time in juvenile prison and jail for a few years before being released and taking some kind of minimum wage job as a dockworker. There I could make enough money to buy cheap beer and live in a van down by the river. Any day now, somebody would find me dead from a crack overdose, lying in a pool of my own tepid filth.

Either that or Rolemaster.

It would have been RQ2, Traveller, and then Call of Cthulu for us.

Later we would have played RQ3 (and then went back to RQ2), the original Twilight 2000, and then the later Twilight 2000 and Dark Conspiracy. Paranoia as well. We also spent a bunch of time with Champions as it went through its first 3 editions.

There are too many games to list. I'm positive that I'd still be role-playing even if OD&D hadn't been the game that we happened to play first. Has it really been 20+ years?

I'm guessing LARPs would have happened on their own as well. I would think the two of these would have generated a paper based RPG game of some sort.

Actually LARPS started about the same time or maybe even before D&D. Anyone remember Killer? (mid 80s game that your LARPed out assassination attempts on other players)

I would be playing Traveller (original), Star Wars, and Car Wars.

I mean, Rolemaster?

Trust me, it's not as bad as they say it is. At the moment, I prefer 3E. But RM was a pretty fun game for a long time.

I rate it easily higher than "dead in a pool of your own tepid filth".

Oh, I know it's not as bad as people say... I've played it before. Own the main book, actualy. But I still don't like it much... just personal preference. It's better than the Palladium system, but...

Huh. You know, I DID play D&D, and I STILL ended up sleeping with women of low morals. Weird.

Lucky bastard. It's hard to find good women like that anymore.
