Yeah start them out with say...a group of adventurers from Bard's Gate. They might have some experience with that.

I replaced it with a fiendish amorphic otyugh. I thought the idea of a killer toilet was, I dunno, something you'd see on Robot Chicken.

Direct quote from the group I ran through RA at Xmas:

If you really want players to make progress and to have hope of someday meeting and beating dying at the hands of big "O", it might be best to have an NPC organization give them a little direction unless they are an organized self-starting group.

I concealed the fact that Orcus was the force behind Rappan Athuk from my players (who know next to nothing about the adventure). I just made vague references to "an evil demon god" and the like. One of their mission objectives was to find out exactly which demon god was involved (the dwarves' temple had some suspicions, but wanted hard proof). Unfortunately they chickened out at the Tomb of Saracek and plan to return with reinforcements (and a rogue, which they neglected to bring along, bwahahahaha!!!)
