If you liked the short format, then Dragon magazine's occasional series covering real world city histories will probably be of interest. Take the details. Change the name. Sketch out a loose map, or recycle a city map from any product where you find one - Dungeon, WoTC books, probably wizards.com in their map section will have some, old 2nd edition PDFs. etc

Yes indeed, both excellent classic village and town sources!

N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God has a village in it, too.

I should also have mentioned Carse, Tulan of the Isles, Jonril, and of course, Sanctuary, the classics from Midkemia/Chaosium, if you can find them. And the Cities sourcebook is not to be missed. Plus Haven from Gamelords. And even Tredroy from Steve Jackson Games...

There are also the Flying Blade books from Flying Buffalo. Your mileage may vary, just as with the Grimtooth books, but there are a lot of cool things in those books.

I keep forgetting about it because I am not much of a fan of the later Thieves World books, and though it can be used throughout all the eras, it is really a more "modern" Sanctuary...

I should note also that Green Ronin's new Pirate's Guide to Freeport book, the statless version here...
