I am starting to hate Tolkein...

It's not even his fault. Usually it's a non-sequiter excuse to not like something. Tolkein isn't involved.

Same thing has happened with Potter-nuts, Mac cultists, and pretty much anyone who doesn't stop nutting about Game of Thrones (I still refuse to read the books on the basis of how GoT fans acted in a board game). Or people who use the Comic Sans font. Your actions are turning me against the products that you like.

Look, if you don't like something, that's fine. I don't need to hear a logical falicy to excuse it. All you are doing is making me not like the things that you like.

Interesting. I was just this morning reflecting on how when somebody is "wrong" on the Internet, be it about politics, social issues or something as trivial as which set of rules for playing elves is "better", I really don't give a crap anymore. I'm doing my own thing now. If folks like it, great. If not, I hope they can find something they enjoy just as much. B-)

Me, I usually read the books long before a game based on it is released. In fact I am half way through A Dance of Dragons - book 6 of the Song of Ice of Fire saga. Great book so far.

And I'm a graphic designer, so Comic Sans - ick!

But you shouldn't let gamers to a board game mess with your fiction reading, that's kind of silly. Not a potter fan, though, so I'm on board with you there.

Not sure who "you" is in your reference though...

I agree. I haven't looked at anything Potter-related simply because of the fan response. It spoiled it for me - I associate That THing with Those People.

That said, I'm also just tired of Tolkien-stuff. It feels so played out for me.

I don't get it.

Annoying people are attracted to all sorts of awesome things. Annoying people exist, and everyone needs to deal with them at some point, and at some point they're going to like something you like, too, and sometimes for really horrible reasons.

Some people are annoying. Seems like part of living in a world with other people in it is learning how to put up with 'em.

Is it impossible to make up your own mind based on the merits of the thing?

I'm no great Tolkien fan, myself. He's all right. As far as D&D goes, I'm glad he's just one influence out of many. Fans and detractors aren't going to turn me off. I'll see for myself what it's like, if it sounds curious enough.

I generally feel the same way even about politics and religion, though, so maybe I'm the anomaly, here. :p
