D&D 5E I Am the Lizard King!

Thanks iserith. I was confused by the statement "As a result, he becomes an adult black dragon without the shadow dragon template. This option makes this encounter a bit more difficult." I would think that it would be easier without the template? I don't have the MM yet, so maybe I'm just missing the details.

It's not clear unless taken in the entire context, so I should revise. What I mean to say is that normally, you either rescue the princess and there is no transformation or you fail to rescue her and have to face the dragon. With the "I Can Do Anything" option, you're either facing a black dragon or a shadow black dragon.

From a character's perspective, I would want to save the girl and prevent the emergence of an evil black dragon. From a player perspective, I wanna fight the dragon.

That option is there so the players can save the girl and fight the Big Bad Dragon.

Banish the princess.

Polymorph then sleep on Lizard King.

Deal with other lizards.

Gather princess. Take Lizard King someplace within an hour's journey. Deal with him.

Profit?

Yeah, you got it. :)

Cool tactic. Cleric and Wizard can do their thing from the first raft.

I like this idea. I have to get used to how Banish works in this version. Didn't old version just work against beings that were from another plane?

Effective but ice cold!

The Wizard does a Dimension Door with the Rogue onto the altar raft to neutralize the Shaman.
The Cleric puts freedom of movement on the Fighter and he goes into the water to demolish the Lizard King

After that the Wizard and Cleric damage/buff depending what the lizards do and the Rogue is likely murdering any Lizard stupid enough to try and climb out of the water onto the Altar.
Should be 4 turns tops before all the Lizards are dead.

Killing the shaman wouldn't stop the ritual as established, but the dimension door might put the rogue in position to possibly free Princess Lilac. The shaman and any nearby lizardfolk may do their best to shove and grapple to try and keep him away from Lilac. The Lizard King might indeed have a problem if Fighter has freedom of movement on him! I'd probably have the Lizard King dive under the water and Dodge to buy time.

Iserith, can the players tell that the Shaman is no longer necessary? Because that seems like the easiest link to break otherwise.

I like how you took distance into account, so that they had to move to the rafts just to cast a lot of the magic.
