I probably wouldn't think to bring up killing the princess as a way to defeat the encounter, but I would say that the shaman's work is done for now. I mostly put him there so he could hinder approaching PCs with entangle and a conjured giant constrictor snake and whatnot.
 
The dry land is also an issue for those that might want to hang back like spellcasters and archers - it's easy to get sucked into the mud and you likely don't have much Strength to get out. A particularly unlucky wizard might end up a well-preserved fossil for future generations to dig up.
