I am trying to figure out how they came up with the X-Wing pilot skill

dagger

Adventurer
It is +7

The size modifier is -5 and the dex mod for the ship is +3.

I am assuming they use +6 as the base since the droid is "skilled".

Thanks!

Ah, no, the dex modifier for the ship isn't +3. It's +6; the T-65B has a dex of 22.

The astromech droid has nothing to do with the T-65's Pilot skill; only the asterisk'd skills are affected by the astromech droid.

From what I can tell, the T-65B is being piloted by a 1st level Heroic character. If you do a breakdown on the raw Defense of the x-wing, you find out that there's a 1 point discrepancy that can only be accounted for if the pilot is 1st level.

A 1st level character trained in Pilot has a Piloting skill of +6 +dex mod +size modifier + ship dex mod. In this case, we have +1 for level, +5 for skill training, +0 for dex, -5 for ship size, +6 for ship dex, which gives a net of +7 Pilot skill.

Tarek,
Slight correction. A 1st level character doesn't have any kind of level bonus to their skill, since the level bonus is 1/2 character level, rounded down.

So a 1st level character with Skill Training and no ability score modifier would only have a +5 bonus to their skill check.

It's a generic crewmember with a rating of "skilled". They have a skill check modifier of +6, and an attack modifier of +2. The rules state that generic crew should be considered to only have nonheroic levels.
So, the only way to get those stats is as a 3rd-level nonheroic character, with 10-11 Dex and trained in Pilot (and the other relevant skills).

Extrapolating a bit, it looks like (assuming 10-11 Dex for all):

Untrained = 1st level non heroic (not trained in Pilot skill, not proficient with vehicle weapons)
Normal = 1st level nonheroic
Skilled = 3rd level nonheroic
Expert = 7th level nonheroic
Ace = 14th level nonheroic

:)

In the old Star Wars system I used to hate the abstract crew levels, because there was no way to replicate them with real NPCs (and this could cause "balance" inconsistencies). Glad that this is finally fixed. :)
