Can you attack a characters items?
I know you can attack thier weapons or shield, but can the monster try to destroy anything else?

I'm actually wondering because the characters in my game have become a tad overequipped and i'm trying to think of plausable ways for them to lose a key item or 2 :D

3.5 does have nifty rules for grabbing items off people though - you use the "Disarm" attack option, with your bare hands.

Things like brooches, cloaks etc can be grabbed directly in combat.

Things like rings etc. are more difficult and you can only attempt it when you are grappling an opponent (and you still get a -4 on top of that).

Cheers

Nope. Strike an item does not work (at least 3.0 wise) with worn items, only with held items.

Actually, yes it does. PHB pg. 135

Held, Carried, or Worn Objects: Attacking a held, carried, or worn object provokes an attack of opportunity.....

In fact, worn objects are easier to hit, because held objects get a +5 bonus to their AC.

As an alternative you could try telekinesis. If they fail their will save you can grab a number of items, and then perhaps destroy/move/etc the items in the following round with a different effect.

AC for a worn ring is

10 + 8 (fine object) + wearer's Dex mod + the wearers deflection bonus

I say it also gets +5 to AC. A rule lawyer may say it is not "in" hand. But the rule also says "because the creature can move it quickly out of harm's way." I think a ring worn around someone's finger is equally safe (he can just flip his hand).

Anyway, typical AC for this is just over 20 to 30. Maybe not so difficult to hit for a higher level character. But in core rule, there is no feat to prevent provoking AoA for this action. This can be some deterrent.

ah, I knew i'd read something like that in the players handbook but i couldn't find it for the life of me thank you! yeah the ac for anything worn is going to be amazing especially on the dex 30 rogue but it should work wonderfully and give the players something new to worry about :)

I hadn't thought of the telekenesis but it's a wonderful idea. The image of a dragon flying some 400 feet in the air telekeneticaly snatching the ring right off the pc's finger is a pleasing one. Although looking at the spell the ring would only move 20 feet a round so it would be drifting away rather slowly towards the circling dragon.

Is it just one specific ring or do you want to destroy some random items? Then you might try a pool of acid and a suggestion. Worked pretty well on my low WIS rogue.
