I can't believe i'm really asking this question.....

I was debating with a friend about a weird thing:if you look to the Contemplative PrC in CD you will find that the PrC states that you gain "new spells per day (and spells known if applicable), as if she had also gained a level in the spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class." and so on.

But it doesn't state that it adds toward your caster level progression.

And many other PrC have similar statements about caster progression.

Then, the question is:do these PrC add caster levels or not?

Does a 7th level cleric/5th level (full-casting progression) PrC cast spells like a 12th level cleric or not?

Thank you in advance. :)

The caster level remains the same but they gain spells as if they were a caster of a higher level.

What? Really?

So a 6th level wizard with +4 casting levels from PrCs only does 6d6 instead of 10d6? Kinda takes the punch outta some of those higher level PrCs...

Most PrCs state that caster level increases.

Example: When a new arcane trickster level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting.

I'm away from my Complete Divine, but it sounds like he's saying the Contemplative fails to specify that.

What do you think about it Hypersmurf?

It's missing, or they deliberately choose to make the PrC in this way?

Well: note that this could lead to a character having access to 9th level spells with a casting level of a 10th level cleric..... :\

Since it doesn't actually specify a caster level increase in ANY of the PrC's in the Complete Divine (at least not the first six I checked), I think it's just an oversight on their part.

It doesn't specify a caster level increase in the Archmage PrC from the 3.5 DMG, but it does for the Eldritch Knight PrC and Loremaster PrC. The heirophont doesn't increase spells per day, but does increase caster level.

I really don't think they intended for the Archmage to stop advancing their caster level, I think it was just an oversight in the write-up, and it's a Cut'n'Paste propagation in Complete Divine.

I agree. It doesn't specify that for some of the PrCs in the DMG either (Arcane Trickster, for one).

Hmm? I already pasted the line from Arcane Trickster that does: "... except for an increased effective level of spellcasting."
