I don't know how I ever managed to game as a kid

Absolute genius. You have come uncomfortably close to my Blue Box experiences.

It really wasn't until 3.0e that I got back into D&D, close to 20 years later.

thanks! -- N

I honestly think that it wasn't untl 3.0 that I really knew how to play before actually playing a session. Even in the CoC, Rolemaster, and Champions games I played in college, I don't think I really grasped any of the systems in their entirety. In a flashback to my experience with Hussein, I remember running some Champs in college, where, after one of the PCs hit a villain in combat, the game ground to a halt as I tried to figure out how the heck you rolled damage. That there were d6's invovled was about the extent of my knowledge.

That is so totally opposite my experiences both in learning the game and since then, I dunno what to say :) I was taught how to play by others, and everyone else I know who has gamed was the same way. We played for a time before GMing, but we read the rule books cover to cover several times. We still do that; we get at least some familiarity with the system.

We read the books cover-to-cover at some point. We even had a "rules lawyer," may pal Rich. It didn't seem to help much.

I do remember thoroughly grokking a replacement initiative system that was in Dragon, though. I didn't know the actual system too well, but I was pretty sure the Dragon version was better.
