I don't need Modern, but that won't stop me!

Again surfaces the issue of us gamers buying every resource in sight, even though we all made better house rules for it anyway.

I don't need d20 modern. But that didn't stop me from pre-ordering it on Amazon.

I have a system that lets the PCs make custom classes (actually I have 3, but only use 1 at a time ), and use the Firearms rules from the Sleeping Imperium web sight. I create all the evil supernatural creatures with the construct-a-class thing too. So, for me, Modern will be obsolete before I get it. But as I said, that didn't stop me.

Why do we do this? What is this omnipresent money-wasting affliction? Why? Why? Why?

If you think you might be interested in third party products that support d20 modern, then you WILL "need" to buy it. Those products will not be easy to adapt to your home brew system.

'cause books have shiny covers, art, less spelling mistakes, are easier to browse, have an index AND a glossary.

That, and it's very useful if everyone uses less or more a standard, because it's easier to exchange ideas and material. Including purchasing published modules.

Finally, a lot of people don't have time to come up with their own house rules or systems and playtest them properly.

Editing. No one can read my house rules (or any game I write) because I tend to scribble my notes down whenever I think of them.
