I got BUSTED!

I would gladly have given him my copy if the rest of the group had the option too AND if he told me they were reading it.

It was his sneakyness that "brought down my thunder" *rolls eyes*; He lost a couple hunderd gold and a chance at a +1 sword. He'll bounce back, and we got a story out of it.

Look at the Customer Service forum for World of Warcraft. That excuse crops up in every other thread.
Excuse? I've had it happen to me. I let my nephew use my account since his mother wouldn't let him have his own account. And then I went to the forums and found I was getting flamed and traced it back to a post he made where he basically called everyone on my server a douche.

Good times, good times.

i don't even consider this cheating i read books because i like to sometimes i'm looking something up or browsing for a character idea or just bored i'll read anything D&D i can lay a hand on but i would most likely tell the DM i had read the thing once i found out we were playing it.

Except that he already knew that his DM was planning on running the adventure.

It wasn't like he read it and then found out at a later date that the DM was going to run the adventure. He read the adventure with the knowledge that he was going to be playing the adventure the very next session.

OMGNOES!

He looked at teh bookz!

Seriously, how is this a big deal?

Any DM worth their salt is going to change things up in a module anyway. Hell, I *expect* most players to read through a module if I'm running it. Half the fun of DM'ing is seeing them go, "Wtf? That wasn't in the module!"

I disagree.

I personally use pre-written adventures because I don't have time to write my own. If I had to rewrite all the plot twists in an adventure because a player had gone out of his way to read the adventure beforehand I would be pissed.

Sure, sometimes it may just be swapping some creatures over or moving some traps around. If you are running a mystery adventure and have to change who did what it is a lot more difficult.

First there are multiple posters on this account (hence "Family") but that's going to stop, just my wife and I are going to use it from now on. Our son and my brother are goning to get their own.
Uh, why one account? You do know that accounts on ENWorld are free, right? I'd recommend that each and every one of ya set up your own personal account. It'd be less confusing for the rest of us, before I saw this thread I just figured you were some schizoid with wildly varying posting patterns (or "voices"). Imagine the continuing confusion of those who haven't been so enlightened . . .

To avoid multiple log-ins, I didn't think the account would be used that much. Wow was I wrong. My brother came over and had a question so I let him use it (which was the thin edge), my wife is on once in a blue moon, and my son was posting tons.

I thought it was a good idea. I was wrong.

My recomendation: Set up a set of new accounts, DadFamily, MomFamily, SonFamily, BrotherFamily, etc...

Stops your confusion right dead in its tracks.

One also shouldn't say "it was my [insert other family member here] on my account".
Eh. It happens. Unless the board/game/whatever in question logs you out automatically after leaving (which EN World doesn't) and logging in requires typing in a password, it can happen quite a bit. For example, if I had a dime for every time I've seen "Whoops, wrong account - I'm actually XYZ" posts, I'd... have a lot of dimes. ;) Also, some people have shared accounts; this appears to be the case here.

Heck, if you post from internet cafes, it can even happen with strangers if you forget to log out. (This is more likely in board communities like EZboard than here, of course.)

If I have to rewrite an adventure from scratch in order to use it, I have to wonder why would I ever pay for such a thing in the first place? I mean, it would be a pretty pointless purchase, right? In fact, why would anybody publish something with that expectation? "Here's a book that you'll need to rewrite from the ground up before you can use it!" doesn't exactly sound like a great selling point ;)

Doesn't forum drama usually take at least two people to create...

This same poster started a thread a few days as the 'DM' in this issue saying they knew a player who used the same account was about to cheat. Now we've got part 2...
