What are percussion caps?

It was an advancement over the old flintlock rifles, where a small cap was filled with some sort of chemical that exploded when hit with a hammer, causing ignition. I think it came into use around 1850 or so.

d20 Past was the first WotC D20 Modern book that I have issues with wrt gun stats, too - not only specifics like range increments but damage dice, but also the duplicate weapons.

Still, there is a lot of stuff given the small page count.

The chemical was usually Mercury Fulminate and the percussion cap system was invented in 1805.
