I have just seen Underworld

As I noted in a previous thread, My wife loved Underworld, and neither Vampire movies nor RPG's are her cup of tea.

It had action, it flowed, and offered some cool visuals and food for thought, as in the scenes on Werewolf torture, the use and abuse of Lycans, etc.

The biggest thing I disliked, honestly, were the UV bullets. It stretched my Suspension too tightly, until it broke and fell. :) Silver nitrate I lived with, though if they had said Sivler Chloride I would have mentally glossed over that with minimal effort.

But in final analysis, it was a fun action film with a neat premise, and I'm not planning to watch it repeatedly because it would wear it out for me.

I liked Blade and Underworld, although neither are works I'd call high-water marks of Hollywood film-making. Haven't seen Blade II, though. Probably will when my wife goes out of town next week...

geez - I thought we'd laid to rest the straw man argument so eloquently expressed  in that comic:
White Wolf's contention has never been solely that they invented vampires and werewolves. Yet that hasn't stopped myriad internet-types to blissfully ignore that WW hasn't argued that only.

Bass Puppet -

Yeah, WW has a better point than the comic makes it look like, but have you looked at some of the absurdities they list as derivative in their lawsuit?

Vampires use weapons like pistols and knives. (my favorite) Vampires are revived by blood. Really old vampires are called Elders. (as opposed to "grandpa" I, guess) In VtM, Assamites are usually African/Middle Eastern, and there's one vampire warrior in the movie who's black. Vampires in both settings have a "Strength of ten men." Vampires in both settings have paramilitary groups dedicated to kicking ass. Vampires in both settings try to stay out of the public eye. Vampires can vanish dramatically.

It goes on in that vein quite a bit (WW practially claims to have invented black clothing, dark streets and rain in that lawsuit.) and I suppose you could argue that all those minor similarities (and there are plenty) add up to something, but you could be just as anal and petty about pointing out the differences and declare they're nothing alike.

Just to throw out for Blade II -- a much better film than the first.
Really? I thought Blade II was... crap.

Underworld was nice and fun. Good story, good action, but my gods, the acting was frelling HORRIBLE. Agonizingly bad. Kraven and Micheal Abomination McDoody Pants sucked terribly.

Kraven definitely, but I thought Michael wasn't too bad. It wasn't exactly a very inspiring role (yay, let's turn into a Nightcrawler-lookalike for the last ten minutes of the movie, and STILL get my butt kicked), but he was likeable enough.

Certainly Lucien was pretty good, and I thought Selene was as well. Although I may be biased on account of the black vinyl.

guess so

don't know what calibre of acting finesse you were looking for...and i'm glad his (michael) ass got whooped a little...even if he is a freak...i figured you'd still have to get use to the idea of what you'd become instead of becomming instant pro...

Nightcrawler? Didn't anyone else think he pretty much turned into an Uruk-Hai? ;)

I've heard one guy claim he turned into a drow. It was a rather... remonstrative post, and he declined to elaborate further when I became... remonstrative in return.

If you know what I mean, and I think you do.
