I hope 4.5 isn't called "4.5"

(Okay, okay, I made up the quote. But come on, surely it is what they WOULD have said, if someone had asked the question, right?)

Maybe they should nip this problem in the bud and call the first revision "4E Beta"
Release only campaign specific fluff heavy material for the next year, then roll out "4th Edition Core Rules"

Okay, not likely. More likely is this:

If they go with the "PHBX every year" plan, they probably wont need to do a whole scale revision. They will just quietly and with little fanfare introduce optional rules that will eventually become the new standard, while also updating original source material from the Digital Initiative.

Think a 1984 style revision of history. To borrow from 3rd edition to 3.5... "There have always been size categories for weapons. The Haste spell never allowed a caster to cast two spells. Harm allows a saving throw."

If they handle it like that, the only inconvenience will be the growing discrepancy between your hardcopy and the Digital version online. But for your convenience, you can upgrade your PHB1 to the corrected version by purchasing a new copy at Retail.

And before anyone actually jumps on me for trying to be anti-4th edition here, I actually like that way of handling it. As long as the digital version is kept up to date and you can access revised rules even if you have an original printing of a PHB, it should work out just fine.

Actually, no, since 3.5 was planned before 3.0 was released (I've seen many quotes, especially from Monte Cook, I think, about this). They just pushed it up for an earlier release than originally planned.

A new PHB every year and they don't really need a rules cleanup in a whole new edition they can add incrimental rule changes/corrections for 3-4 years and then sell everbody everything all over again in a Rules Compendium.
They have already stated (I think it was Chris Perkins in an earlier podcast or interview - sorry neither format is easily referenced material, personal nitpick) that with DDI they plan to make the incremental changes to avoid a 4.5 release. I'm sure like you say, the PHBx will factor into that as well. But one of the top fellas in R&D has specifically stated DDI will be used to push out small changes and fixes and prevent the need for ever doing a 4.5.

And I'm cool with that. I don't really see a better way to do it. Sure, your books may be full of errors eventually, but you CAN print the pdf of your 4e book (and that pdf will be updated in time).

Recently, a player wanted to be a transmuter. I had to dig through my books trying to remember where the changes to Polymorph were printed (PHB2, iirc).
