I just ate the Red Violin of pizzas

Italian (traditional oven) is the only true pizza. All the other pizzas are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D

Jaerdaph, Cthulhu's Librarian -> Is this John's Pizzeria, next to a theater? If so, I found it to be average at best (and quite oval :) ).

There is one near a theater uptown (it's actually the largest pizzaria in the world, just saw it on TV the other night), but the one I'm talking about is on Bleeker Street down in the Village. Same owners, but the pizza tastes a little different from my experiences.

As for being oval, yeah, they never come out of the oven round. But the coal fired brick oven burns some of the crust (which is the best part!) nice and crispy and leaves the sauce and cheese perfectly done.

Then I ate at the one uptown. Thanks for the info.

But coal-fired oven isn't the best for pizza. Wood-fired oven makes the best pizza.

If you, Jaerdaph and Truth Seeker (hi, Truth!) ever come down to Rio, I'm buying you guys pizza! :)

Best pizza I've had...
#1. An acre of Sicilian pizza had sometime in the late 80s in a nameless NYC pizza shop. Ordering the thing felt like a vicious family argument; best I ever had (even 1 day later).
#2. A weird, "customized" pie had at a no-longer-existing place in Northampton, MA whose prime ingredients were garlic, artichoke hearts, and shrimp.

Please don't ask for directions. ;)

Just as a quick hijack, my WORST pizza ever was in a NYC Sbarro place. Not even the fact that it was my first hot meal after a 10-hour flight could salvage that one...

:p

Ugh. Sbarro is unbelievably overpriced and horribly bad. I'll never eat pizza at any of their locations.

BTW, did you know that pizza has just about the best profit margin of any restaurant item? My brother used to make pizzas at some gormet pizza joint in Olympia, Washington. He told me that the average cost to make a pizza (any toppings) was under $1.50. The average price that said pizza was sold for? $13.00

Yeah!

Well, I can make a pretty nice pizza with sliced bread, ketchup, mozzarella and oregano. Tasty and belly-filling in mere 10 minutes!

Has saved me from many drinking nights... :)
