It has something to do with trying to distance themselves from their past association with the Nazis (they or the company's founder supplied the vehicles).

Or make sense. It always bothered me that megatron was a huge robot, and transformed into an itty-bitty pistol. The size dealie stuck in my craw for some reason. As toys, there was no size issue. But as a cartoon, it seemed strange. Same for Soundwave and the tapes that he carried.Darth Shoju said:The only reason my friend and I could come up with for these changes is that they were having trouble making giant robots turning into little walther ppks and tape recorders look good in CGI.
I seem to remember the trailer just disapparing most of the timeLord Pendragon said:It also might explain Prime, aside from the precedent others have mentioned. Not that Big Rigs are small. But Prime was traditionally just the cab, with the trailer becoming some sort of battle platform. In comparison, a fire engine would provide a lot more mass, if you wanted Prime to be a larger robot than the rest of the Autobots/Transformers.
All just conjecture on my part.
