I just lost my dice bag, and this is a serious financial loss

I've got 7 shelves worth of fantasy, Sci-fi, and gaming books... and six shelves. And a shelf full of programming books that I keep at the office because there's not a good place to keep them in my apartment.

But my dice are still in a cheezy Domino's Pizza cup with a lid that I picked up as a freebie when I was an undergrad, and half the dice in it have been picked up secondhand or by raiding board games.

The only gaming stuff I ever lost, though, wasn't especially valuable. My 2E books were in a box that somehow got left behind when I came home from college for the summer one year, along with some novels, some textbooks, and some gaming notes. I never figured out what happened to them, but I've already spent far more on 3e stuff than I ever did on 2e stuff.

Well, I've lost 2 bags of dice over my gaming career. Very traumatic experiences. However, fate has repayed one of those. Once I was driving through a hamburger joint at around 3 in the morning, in a downpour. As I rounded the corner of the drivethru, I noticed some brightly colored specks on the concrete... and recognized them instantly as dice! Someone had apparently tossed an entire bag out of the car. Probably an evil gamer or a soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend/boyfriend.

Thanks dice abandoner!

My biggest gaming loss was accidently leaving a gun case with about 20 lovingly painted miniatures in it.

They were the first really nice minis that I ever painted, and I probably sunk about 100 combined hours into cleaning, painting, detailing and caring for all of them.

It was a horrible loss.

This barely even counts as slightly ridiculous compared to what some people have, but I carry with me, quite often, $235 dollars of RPG material.

$60 Core Rules
$30 Oriental Adventures
$40 CoC
$20 PsiHB
$30 Relic and Rituals
$40 Splat books
$15 Gaming Essentials (Paper, Pencils, Dice)

*I'm a little hazy on prices, so they probably aren't accurate, but they're close.

YIKES!!!

And as I parted with my huge collection for about 1.2k, I realized that over the years, since 1994, I had sunk over 15 thousand dollars into little fistfulls of cards.

I almost cried.

$15 000 !!! US? Y I K E S !
and you only got $1200 back?

dude what appened?

I invested about $4500 grand Australian (half that for US) and when i did wake up to myself and got out (about 3 years ago) i sold off most of my cards and broke even...

While i was playing I traded and collected quite alot and was left with about $2000 worth of cards profit (which i am in the process of selling still :)

I usually sell cards in trickles now and just put that money into other stuff like RPGS and CRPG's :)

With regards to the loss of a $300 dice bag...I know how you feel...Im an old 1E player and i had a dice bag from about 15 years ago that had about 100 dice in it...it was my pride and joy...

When 3E came out i went hunting for it and couldnt find it anywhere :(

So its either lost or someones 'borrowed' it...

I might start collecting again...If i ever get a group together

I lost all my 1st edition books etc in a fire in 84, one of my ex Girl friends threw all my 2nd edition books etc. away when she left (I was at work) in 92. I'm getting a divorce now so I'm keeping all my 3e stuff close at hand to avoid a repeat.

After reading the first post on this thread, I thought about losing the bag with all of the Dwarven Stones sets I own in it. (shudder) Not a pleasant thought, since I own almost every set they make. So I can understand how traumatic this must be. I feel your pain.

While not RPG material, I finally escaped from Magic: The Gathering addiction last year. I was unemployed, and had to
sell the cards I had left in order to eat.

Sounds like you got reemed to me. Unless you were a player that got onboard late. I sold all my MTG stuff about 5 years ago and I banked big time. Of course I had been playing since Beta and had the bigger cards but still. Seems like you got seriously raped.

The reason I sold my cards was due to the type 2 tournament envirnment push. I hated the fact that I had to buy newer and newer cards to stay competetive so I just sold it all and stuck with my 'ol faithful RPG's. I can use a character I mad 12 yeasrs ago and it's still legal with a little work and no money.

But to stay O.T. I also lost my dice bag once. I feel your pain man

Never lost the whole dice bag, but i lost my back-up dice tubes, sorry not to scarry I know.

But as to Magic cards, I am not sure how much I dumped into the game, but I got out for two reasons, first, I was not willing to dump more and more money to just be competitive in friendlies. And I was getting married and I needed a lot of cash fast, so I sold my collection en masse...I made in cash all Benjamins, $2500! I was able to pay for the wedding and for a good chunk of the honeymoon, my wife is still so happy about this. She hated the Magic cards.

Keep in mind the difference between carefully, wheeling, dealing, and selling your collectibles when the price is right...

...and selling your collectibles because All Babies Must Eat. :)
