I just realised...

I think it was the last one.... and I think it's silly. Why should a ninja, a so called specialist, be weaker in that regard than any street thug?

Well, ninjas do have an easy means to fade from sight, so they should not get the flanking part to boot. Plus, ninjas are good in other stuff, too, not just killing: The whole sneaking and infiltrating thing (being able to go everywhere) is there, too.

In my campaigns, we were having a problem with Rogues not being able to sneak attack often enough to make the class worthwhile - I had / have a tendency to use Barbarians as the enemy melee class.

I've gone with what one might call a "strict interpretation" of the Uncanny Dodge ability vs Sneak Attack (although one also might call it "just makin' stuff up").

Uncanny Dodge states "you retain your dexterity bonus to AC", and Sneak Attack says "would be denied their dexterity bonus to AC". They *would be* denied it - so sneak attack applies. They keep their Dex bonus to their AC, though.

I had a problem with the fact that Barbarians are exactly the sorts of people that Sneak Attack is most useful against - low AC, high HP - but then their class gives them immunity (or virtual immunity). The change has worked wonders. Barbarians still have an advantage over others when facing rogues - by retaining their Dex bonus, it's less likely that the Rogue will be able to hit them. But the Rogue no longer has to just stand back and watch when fighting barbarians.

Just a suggestion.

You're right on the money. Like lets say that I'm playing my Feint Rogue (built to feint as a free action). I can feint an opponent who does not have a Dex Bonus, yet because that opponent would be denied his/her Dex Bonus I get the chance to sneak attack.

In the campaign I'm in right now, to clear up the issue we use the terms "flat-footed" for suprise and "off balance" when refering to a situation where a target would be denied a Dex bonus.

Just my thoughts.

Well, there are other things to do than sudden strike. Unless you repeatedy fight teams of barbarians, rogues, and monks, Ninjas are just fine. They get 6 skill points, a host of special abilities, and lets face it, sneak attack gets ignored by uncanny and improved uncanny dodge, which is almost always found in a class that gets uncanny,

do you really think that this is that much worse?

just gotta say, maybe theyre like monks, good on paper, terrible in play

I don't have the PHB on me at the moment, but isn't there text in there that says Uncanny dodge can be beaten by a rogue of 3 levels higher?
Or is that by a class who also has Uncanny dodge? Do Ninjas have uncanny dodge?

If not, then there is what every one else is saying..Feint!

It's by a rogue of 4 levels higher.

Sneak Attack and Sudden Strike stack anyways. It just means that WotC doesn't like classes of Asian/non-european backgrounds, c'mon, look at what they did to them, ninjas get hosed and are MADed out, samurai are screwy (the CWar version at any rate) and MADed, monks are MADed out, and none live up to expectations.
