I love the season too, the snow, the music, everything until about December 20th where I'm all jaded and want it to end.

I'm the opposite, I get cranky when all the holiday stuff first comes out, then start to like it once we're in what I actually think of as the holiday season....

If you mean first comes out, such as October in most areas, then you're right. Starting from December 1 or so, I'm in the "spirit of Christmas" frame of mind, then about the 20th where I'm tired of the crowds and attitudes.

I honestly think we need to break some of these "big" holidays up, I mean Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's; come on, people.

I call it "the candy season".... lasts right up to easter. :D

But yeah, in my family its even worse since my birthday, my husband's, my son's and all our siblings', our aniversery and my parents aniversery all also fall within the sept - early jan window. Its like a marathon of significant days....

I think one of the things I love most about Christmas is the way a bunch of cool stuff comes out right before Christmas in anticipation of gift sales. This usually includes new books by some of my favorite authors, DVDs of movies I've been waiting for on DVD, and misc other unanticipated goodies. :)

Um.

Christmas = Christ's Mass. Sure, there are other things that are celebrated and/or used to be on that day, and yes, that may even historically be the reason for the day chosen. But, most Christians don't know that or don't think about it, to them it is the day to celebrate Christ's birth. Point is, it may not have been the day He was born on (which is lost to history), but the day DOES mark His birth for a lot of people.

ok, a detailed overparsing of what "marks" can be expanded to mean really wasn't on my list for tonight, so lets just say that the distinction between "jesus's birthday" and "the day picked centuries later to assign as 'marking' Jesus's birth" lead to the inadvertant traumatising of two of my classmates once. ;)

Note: I'm a former coven High Priest (our group fell apart), so don't think you're being persecuted. I just really think people in general need to relax.

You know, I was totally relaxed when I reponded to diaglo, and the only thing unrelaxing me is the number of folks assuming axiety on my part. I'm not feeling persecuted, I'm not offended, I'm just noting what I read as a overly broad assignment of mativation to others and pointed it out.

He said "others". "Others" is not an all-inclusive group. And, if he believes that people behave that way because of the influence of Jesus, what does that really hurt? It'll be okay.
um, yeah, it already is "ok". Again with the overparsing, I made a not looking for trouble contextual reading of Diaglo's comments and unless he tells me thats not what he meant, I'll mention that many do not have the motivations he is assuming.

What does it hurt? Nothing more than any other incorrect assumption about the people around you hurts, I guess. What does it hurt to point it out?

If it wasn't any big deal, why did you call attention to it and point it out?

I suggested you combine them into one large four day weekend:

You can call it New Anabirmasgivingween

(sometimes I correct the idea that christmas actually marks jesus's birth, but occasionally folks get traumatised. )

i'm not offended. pick any day of the calendar and celebrate it.

the orthodox christmas isn't dec 25. it is jan something (i'm not orthodox).

christmas tree... pagan.
santa claus, father christmans, saint nicholas, jolly fat man ...

for me christmas is about love. like i said i do that all year long.

when it rolls around this time of year, i see it more openly by others.

i'm not saying it is a good or bad thing. i'm not placing judgement on them. i'm not saying they should do it more or less.

i'm saying it gladdens my heart.
